Akira Mizutani
■ Interview to leader of the group
Tonight we have with us Akira Mizutani who leads one of the most unique bands from Japan comprised of 10 baritone saxophones.
Glad to have you with us Akira.
I'm very happy to be here.

How long have you had the band together?
About six years.
Though a few member have come and gone.

How did it feel playing with the band outside of Japan?
It was a really excellent experience.
Although we had stage fright...

Do you feel any differences between London audiences and Tokyo audiences?
It all depends on the venue. But in general I think London audiences are much more relaxed. They really seem to enjoy the music. And believe if or not,Yes,they are very excited. They're a little bit more energetic than Japanese audiences and more responsive. I like that. The more energy we get from the audience the better we'll sound.

What gave you the idea to start a band with 10 baritone saxophones?
I can't give you a clear answer. I just love the baritone saxophone: the sound, the looks, the size, the weight, everything about it...I love it!

How did people react when you told them of your idea?
They thought I was crazy. They could't imagine the sound. They could't believe I had actually done it. ...Now, they don't think I'm crazy anymore. They have to call me a genius.

How would you classify your music?
We are an adventure in modern music...sorry... We're searching for a style as yet we can't pinpoint what you'd call it. If I dare to say,we are a rock band. I don't mean it in sound. I mean it in spirit.

How do you feel about being classified as a jazz band?
I wouldn't mind. I know most people call all good music jazz. So actually I wouldn't mind it,if people think we're jazz band, classical band or rock band. It doesn't matter. It's not necessary to classify it. But I guess it's safe to say we don't fit any particular genre.

Are there any Tokyo Chutei iki CD's on sale here in London?
Not yet.
(They can be bought in the shop of "Rays jazz at Foyles" now.)

How soon do you think they'll be on London store shelves?
I have no idea. It depends on how much you London people need us.

Do you have any future plans for the band?
We'd like to branch out to the world.

When can we expect you back?
Next year if it possible. Could you invite us again?
